Hartsville Man Misses Powerball® Jackpot by One Number
9/13/2011 8:37:59 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (September 13, 2011) – A Hartsville man finished his bowl of cereal Sunday morning and sat down in the den with his newspaper. He checked the Powerball® numbers first. According to his wife, he sat for a long time, not saying a word, just staring at the Powerball® ticket in his hand.

“I was confused, because five numbers actually matched,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do.”

When he finally spoke, he told his wife he thought they won something, not the jackpot, but maybe $200,000. He wasn’t sure. She told him to find out.

He went over to Foxes Corner in Hartsville where he buys tickets to confirm the first five numbers (4, 19, 22, 32, and 53 PB: 24) matched to win $200,000.

The winner admits he always spends the extra $1 for PowerPlay®, but not this time. If he had, the prize would have been an automatic $1 million.

“I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, there went $600,000 down the drain,’” said the winner.

His wife keeps reminding him the winnings are still enough to pay off the house, buy him a new truck and save for retirement.

“Get this, I was only one number away from winning the jackpot,” he said. “I would have danced my way to Columbia with that ticket, but this is good too.”

The odds of winning $200,000 are 1 in 5,138,133.

Foxes Corner received a commission of $2,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 920,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.5 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
