Charleston Man Returns from Iraq to Win $100,000

COLUMBIA, SC (August 26, 2011) – A Charleston man is keeping more than his $100,000 lottery win a secret.

“No one knows I’m even in the country,” he confessed.

The winner has been doing contract work in Iraq for the last three years and before that he spent two years in Afghanistan.

“I haven’t told my family yet, and I want to surprise them this weekend,” he said not wanting to release his name and spoil his plans.

He arrived home to Charleston two days ago. He bought a Money Multiplier ticket for fun and scratched the ticket in his hotel room. He couldn’t believe the result.

The cash couldn’t have come at a better time. He told lottery officials he spent his nest egg moving his family from Thailand home to Charleston. The winnings are going in the bank, and he’s concentrating solely on his homecoming.

The Charleston winner took home the last top prize in the $5 Money Multiplier game. The odds of winning $100,000 are 1 in 540,000.

Every retailer that sells a claimed ticket of $10,000 or more earns a 1 percent retailer commission, capped at $50,000. Kangaroo Express #797 in North Charleston received $1,000.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 920,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.5 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
