Lottery Winner Glad to Pay the Government Its Due
8/10/2011 12:15:26 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (August 10, 2011) – When a Duncan man told his wife they owed the government $32,000, she wasn’t pleased.

“Are you kidding me?” was her response.

He wasn’t joking, but he was smiling thinking about all the taxes he owed.

“We won $100,000,” he said.

He checked Friday’s Palmetto Cash 5 results (2, 15, 23, 36, and 37) using an app he downloaded to his smart phone. He had played Palmetto Cash 5 less than ten times but knew matching all the numbers meant the top prize was his.

The taxes on his winnings didn’t dampen his mood a bit.

“I’m glad to pay them,” he told lottery officials.

The odds of winning the top prize playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 501,942.

Had the winner paid the extra $1 for Power-Up, his $100,000 Palmetto Cash 5 winnings would have been doubled to $200,000.

Every retailer that sells a claimed ticket of $10,000 or more earns a 1 percent retailer commission, capped at $50,000. Kangaroo Express #3294 at 2195 E. Main St. in Duncan received $1,000.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 920,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.8 BILLION has been appropriated to support educational programs in the Palmetto State through June 2012.
