Powerball® Jackpot Climbs to $220 MILLION!
8/8/2011 12:40:19 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (August 8, 2011) – An estimated $220 MILLION Powerball® jackpot headlines Wednesday night’s drawing.

The jackpot registers in the top 10 Powerball® jackpots of all time.

“A jackpot run is unbelievably exciting for the Education Lottery and its players,” said the Lottery’s Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “We want to remind everyone to please play responsibly.”

The odds of winning the Powerball® jackpot are 1 in 195,249,054.

It has been two years since South Carolina has produced a Powerball® jackpot winner. Solomon Jackson Jr. won a $259.9 million Powerball® jackpot in August 2009.

“I know I will be watching Wednesday night’s drawing with my fingers crossed hoping a South Carolinian will be holding that winning ticket,” said Bethea. “Obviously the winner benefits, but so does the state when a jackpot-winning ticket is sold here.”

“When you spend an extra $1 for a ticket, even if you don’t win, education always wins,” added Bethea.

South Carolinians wanting to take a chance on Wednesday night’s drawing must purchase their Powerball® tickets by 9:59 p.m. for the 10:59 p.m. drawing.

Tickets are $1 and are available at lottery retailers statewide.

Players can purchase PowerPlay® for an extra $1 to multiply their non-jackpot winnings by the PowerPlay® number drawn. Match 5 white balls with PowerPlay® to win an automatic $1 million, regardless of the multiplier selected.

Proceeds from every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery are returned to the state in the form of funding for education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for goods and services.
