$20,000 Lottery Ticket Left in the Car
8/4/2011 10:49:07 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (August 4, 2011) – Barry Alford would have splurged on dessert for his family had he known the lottery ticket out in the car was worth $20,000.

On the way to dinner, Alford bought a South Carolina Education Lottery ticket and then forgot about it. At bedtime, he remembered the Rock & Roll 7s ticket was stuffed in his car’s overhead visor.

His two daughters were still up to watch him scratch the ticket. He wife wasn’t. He woke her up with the results and then called and woke his mom up too.

“It was rocking,” he laughed describing the late night scene at the Alford’s Fountain Inn residence.

He told lottery officials he rarely plays the Lottery, but the number “7” on the Rock & Roll 7s ticket caught his eye. He got two tickets for $4. The last number on his last ticket matched and won the Cryovac employee the cash.

With a daughter in college, Alford has set the money aside to cover her tuition.

“I’m still in disbelief,” he said. “Winning $20,000 on a $2 ticket, did that just happen?”

As of this release, three top prizes of $20,000 remain in the $2 Rock & Roll 7s game.

The odds of winning $20,000 are 1 in 432,000.

Sav-Way in Fountain Inn received $200, a 1 percent retailer commission for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 920,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.8 BILLION has been appropriated to support educational programs in the Palmetto State through June 2012.
