Walhalla Retiree Wins $300,000

COLUMBIA, SC (June 28, 2011) – A Walhalla man plans to enjoy his $300,000 South Carolina Education Lottery prize.

He’s starting with a new truck—a Chevrolet.

The winner did not want to release his name, but told lottery officials he checked his Palmetto Cash 5 numbers (6, 8, 14, 35, and 36) for Friday night’s drawing while enjoying his Saturday morning cup of coffee.

“I was pretty excited,” he said. “I was about as excited as I can get.”

“Had it been a Powerball® ticket I’d probably had a heart attack,” he added.

Waiting out the weekend was tense. He cashed in the ticket yesterday having spent the night before in Columbia hoping to relax in a different setting.

“Unbelievable,” he said of the series of events. “This is going to make life easier.”

He also spent the extra $1 for Power-Up. The Power-Up number drawn was a “3,” which tripled his $100,000 winnings to $300,000.

The odds of winning the top prize playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 501,942.

Every retailer that sells a claimed ticket of $10,000 or more earns a 1 percent retailer commission, capped at $50,000. Walhalla Food Store in Walhalla received $3,000.
