First-time Palmetto Cash 5 Player Takes the Top Prize
5/18/2011 11:39:38 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (May 18, 2011) – Call it beginner’s luck, a Mount Pleasant woman bought her first Palmetto Cash 5 ticket and won $100,000.

“The only thing I regret is that I forgot to Power-Up,” said the winner.

Had she “Powered-Up” for an extra $1, her $100,000 winnings would have tripled to $300,000.

The winner told lottery officials she learned she matched all five numbers drawn (10, 17, 24, 30, and 34) for the Thursday, May 12 drawing standing at the Bi-Lo customer service counter. Her reaction attracted the attention of grocery shoppers around her, so the clerk advised her to sign and fold up the ticket, go home and keep quiet.

No way could she keep the news to herself. She called her family and invited everyone over to celebrate.

“I’ve decided I want this to be a blessing to other people,” she said.

The odds of winning the top prize playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 501,942.

There have been 13 winners of the $100,000 top prize in Palmetto Cash 5 since January 1, 2011. Eight of these winners “Powered-Up” to multiply their winnings by the Power-Up multiplier.

The Mt. Pleasant Exxon #6 in the winner’s hometown received $2,000, a 1 percent retailer commission paid on the claimed ticket.

Approximately 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery is returned to the state in the form of funding for education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for goods and services.
