Columbia Man’s Handful of Old Tickets Yields a $250,000 Winner

COLUMBIA, SC (May 13, 2011) – A Columbia man won $2 playing the Lottery yesterday, or so he thought.

He found the $2 winner in a stack of about 20 or so tickets along with a Mega Millions® ticket the clerk scanned and told him the Lottery would need to review.

No clue why the Lottery needed to see his ticket, he drove the short distance downtown to the Claims Center to see what was wrong.

He took the news he won $250,000 quite well.

“Can I have another look at the ticket,” he asked wide-eyed.

His ticket matched all five white ball numbers for the Tuesday, May 3, Mega Millions® drawing (1, 16, 29, 36, and 50 MB: 16).

“It’s another day in paradise,” spoke the winner.

He did not want to release his name but told lottery officials he would like to buy his mom a house with the unexpected wealth.

“I’m content with what I have,” he said. “I’d rather see others happy.”

Had the winner paid an extra $1 for the Megaplier®, the ticket would have been worth $1 million. The Match 5 prize with Megaplier® is an automatic $1 million, regardless of the Megaplier® number selected.

The odds of winning $250,000 playing Mega Millions® are 1 in 3,904,701.

Now that the prize has been paid, Pitt Stop #8 in Columbia received $2,500, a 1 percent retailer commission.
