Best Friends Share $250,000 Mega Millions® Prize

COLUMBIA, SC (March 29, 2011) – Friends for over 20 years, a Mega Millions® ticket has brought two Summerton neighbors even closer together.

“We are the same age, have the same wedding anniversary, and now have won $250,000 playing the Lottery together,” one of the winners told lottery officials.

Saturday, the two guys were making their rounds at Walmart and the hardware store, when they stopped for a hotdog at Sonic. Waiting for the food, they checked their Mega Millions® ticket using a winning numbers print out they had picked up at a retailer. They took turns reading the numbers out to each other, getting happier as each number was called.

“For me, this is only the third time I’ve played the Lottery,” said one of the men.

“Nobody believes us,” said the other.

The ticket is proof. The fellows matched all five white ball numbers for the March 25, Mega Millions® drawing (22, 24, 31, 52, and 54 MB: 4). Had they paid an extra $1 for the Megaplier®, the ticket would have been worth $1 million. The Match 5 prize with Megaplier® is an automatic $1 million, regardless of the Megaplier® number selected.

Had the Megaball® matched, a share of the $312 million jackpot would have been theirs.

“That’s all right, we still won,” said one.

“I wouldn’t have minded the jackpot,” refuted the other. “We’d be giving money away today.”

To celebrate, the two went out Saturday night for karaoke and will probably go out tonight. Beyond that, who knows? One of the winners mentioned fixing up his house, the other buying a car or boat that actually runs.

“We have always counted on each other,” said one of the winners. “I know that won’t change.”

Now that the prize has been paid, American Grocery & Liquor Store in Sumter has received $2,500, a 1 percent retailer commission.

The odds of winning $250,000 playing Mega Millions® is 1 in 3,904,701.
