Williamston Mechanic Wins $1 MILLION Playing Powerball®
3/4/2011 3:04:33 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (March 4, 2011) – A Williamston man stayed up all night last night reading and guarding a $1 MILLION lottery ticket tucked in his wallet.

The winner and his dad turned the ticket in today. The father and son told lottery officials they buy a Powerball® ticket together almost every week, but never imagined anything like this was possible.

“We play, but never in my life did I think we would win anything,” the winner said.

“We aren’t rich people,” the father told lottery officials. “We’re still going to work.”

The winner, who is a mechanic, agreed this money isn’t going to change his life, just make life a little easier. The father advised his son to pay off his house and start college funds for his children.

The winning ticket matched all five white ball numbers and missed the red Powerball® drawn in the March 2, 2011, Powerball® drawing (7 – 31 – 50 – 51 – 58 PB: 6). The winner purchased PowerPlay® for an additional $1. The Match 5 prize with PowerPlay® is an automatic $1 MILLION, regardless of the PowerPlay® number selected.

“I spend the extra $1 just in case,” the winner said. Had he not, the take home would have been $200,000, decent, but a far cry from $1 million.

The folks at Pelzer Food Store in Pelzer are also celebrating. The winner told lottery officials it was his first time in the store when he bought the millionaire making ticket. Turns out the store has only been selling lottery tickets for a couple of weeks. Now that the prize has been paid, the location has received $10,000, a 1 percent retailer commission.

Owner Amit Patel has dubbed the place a “lucky store” and is reportedly working on planning a Grand Opening celebration.

The father and son plan to drop in sometime, maybe for another Powerball® ticket but definitely to thank the young woman behind the counter that sold them a memorable ticket.
