Longtime Charleston Resident Wins $1 Million Mega Millions® Prize
1/6/2011 9:21:25 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (January 6, 2011) – A 50-year resident of Charleston has claimed the $1 million Mega Millions® ticket for Tuesday night’s drawing.

“I’ve been smiling, and I’m still smiling,” the retired winner told lottery officials when he arrived at the Charleston Regional Claims Office to redeem the ticket.

The winner missed claiming a share of the historic $380 million Mega Millions® jackpot, the second highest in the game’s history, by one number. He matched all five white ball numbers but missed the Megaball® (4, 8, 15, 25, and 47, MB: 42).

The winner, who did not want to release his name, purchased Megaplier® for an additional $1, which multiplied his $250,000 winnings to $1 million.

He didn’t share any specific plans for the $1 million, but said. “I’ve got a lot of things I’m going to do now.”

For selling the redeemed winning ticket, Kangaroo Express #839 at Folly Beach received $10,000. Every retailer that sells a claimed ticket of $10,000 or more earns a 1 percent retailer commission, capped at $50,000.

The estimated jackpot for Friday night’s Mega Millions® drawing is $12 million.
