COLUMBIA, SC (October 8, 2010) – A great grandmother, residing in Hampton, S.C., says she is still surprised and can’t believe her sudden windfall of $200,000. She plans on putting the winnings in the bank to draw interest and pay off a few bills while donating some to the family’s church.
The mother of seven children with 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren doesn’t want to publicize her name, but says she and her family are definitely thankful and blessed to win a top prize on the $10 Extreme Cash ticket.
“I enjoy playing the scratcher games and Powerball® because, even if I don’t win, then it helps education and public schools,” she said. “I consider it a donation if I don’t win, but I definitely won this time!”
The 79-year-old winner purchased her winning ticket at the Tiger Express Varnville located at Highway 278 in Varnville.
The retailer who sells a claimed ticket worth more than $10,000 receives a 1 percent retailer commission. The Tiger Express received a $2,000 retailer commission.
Since the Lottery’s inception in 2002, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2.5 billion for educational purposes through fiscal year 2011. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, more than 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery was returned to the state in the form of contributions to education, prizes, retailer commissions and payment to contractors for goods and services.
