COLUMBIA, SC (February 11, 2009) – There are millions of reasons to get in the game! The estimated Powerball® jackpot for tonight’s drawing is $78 million.
Players should carefully check their tickets following the drawing. Even if the Powerball® jackpot is not won, there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. In South Carolina, 23,540 players won prizes from $7 up to $10,000 in Saturday’s drawing. In addition, 641,315 Powerball® tickets across the nation won a total of $4,185,649 in prizes.
Powerball® is now played in 30 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held each Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
Since the Lottery’s inception in 2002, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2 billion for educational purposes through fiscal year 2009. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, more than 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery is returned to the state in the form of contributions to education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for goods and services.
