
Nathaniel "Nate" Spells, Sr.
Nathaniel “Nate” Spells, Sr. began a career in construction after earning his bachelor’s degree in building construction from Clemson in 1972, making him the first African-American to earn that degree from the university. After working for some of the best construction firms across the nation, Spells started his own company in 1987. Construction Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) is one of the Southeast’s leading General Contracting and Construction Management firms. Clients comprise religious, government and education sectors. CDI is headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, with offices in Charleston, South Carolina and Pearl, Mississippi. Throughout his career, Mr. Spells has received awards including the BB&T Trailblazer Award and the City of Columbia Visionary Service Award. He is a trustee at Brookland Baptist Church and serves as a board member for the South Carolina Community Bank. He is also a member of the Construction Management Association of America, the Associated General Contractors of America, the Council for Educational Facility Planners, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Further, Mr. Spells is recognized as a 2005 Clemson University Alumni Fellow, a recognition given to only four alumni each year, to celebrate the career success of Clemson graduates. He is married to Marilyn Scott Spells and has one son, Nathaniel Spells, Jr.
